Course 1Your role on the classroom team
Lesson 02 / 06
Role judgment

Confidence includes knowing when to pause.

Aides make dozens of fast decisions. A simple decision rule helps you act without guessing, delaying safety responses, or taking on professional decisions assigned to others.

The essential practice

Choose the correct action category before acting.

Ask three questions: Is the direction clear? Am I trained and authorized? Does this situation require immediate safety action or professional judgment beyond my role?

01

Implement

The approved direction is clear, you are prepared, and the situation matches the plan.

02

Clarify first

The goal, procedure, data definition, or your assigned responsibility is incomplete or ambiguous.

03

Refer or get help

Contact the appropriate trained or authorized staff when there is a safety concern, disclosure, serious change, plan failure, or decision beyond your role. If safety may be at risk, get help immediately.

Neutral clarification language
“I want to make sure I use the plan correctly. Should I prompt once and wait, or repeat the direction?”

Specific questions are faster to answer and easier to implement than saying only that you are confused.

Avoid the common trap

Do not guess at a behavior plan, delay a safety report while gathering proof, or interpret asking for direction as a sign of weakness.

Classroom situation

You are told to record how long refusal lasts, but the form does not define when refusal begins or ends. The student has not yet arrived.

Quick practice

Which action category fits best?

Take it to class

Use the practice on your next shift.

Remember

Clear and trained: implement. Ambiguous: clarify.

Look for

Safety or professional judgment beyond your role: refer or get help.
